The Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple is the center of Sikhism around the World. Last summer when I visited this temple, I was mesmerized by its elegance. Being a non-Sikh, it was a little difficult to understand the process of following the norms and traditions before entering the temple. And that’s why I am writing this post about everything you need to know about visiting the Golden Temple.

Hey, I would like to suggest you my guide to Covering Amritsar in One Day. You must read it if you have limited time.

Reaching the Temple

The closest airport to Amritsar is around 12 kilometers away from the city center. You can get a rickshaw for around Rs.500 from the airport or book a cab for around Rs. 1,000. Remember to bargain as hard as possible.

If you are coming by rail, then you can get a decent hotel about 1 km away from the railway station at Queen’s Road. From Queen’s Road, you can get a rickshaw for the Golden Temple for about Rs.10-20/person.

Temple Timings

Temple opens at around 6 in the morning and closes by 10.30pm. You can get Prasad meal or Langer any time when the temple is open.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the temple is in the early morning or at around 9 pm as the rush in these hours is comparatively less, and the climate is perfect. Although I would highly suggest, you experience the temple twice, once in the daylight and once at night. Both the time the charm of the temple is equal but in a different way.

What to Wear

What to wear in Amritsar

Before entering the temple make sure to cover your head with a cloth. Don’t wear sleeveless tops or shorts to the temple. It’s not like its ban or something but its just rude to wear that in any Temple in India.

Part 1

Everything you need to know about Amritsar

Once you get in the rickshaw for the temple, it will drop you about 400 meters away from the temple. You will have to walk through a quaint and well-maintained street. Huge Monuments and statues will surround the street. You will also find a substantial number of Stores. It would be better for you to ask locals for the route.

Part 2

Once you enter the temple’s main gate, you will see a vast open room hallway. Deposit your shoes and socks in the lockers and collect a badge of your locker. Now head towards the second gate, where you will have to dip your feet in the water. Also, make sure to cover your head with a handkerchief or any cloth before entering the second gate.

Part 3

As you enter the second gate, you will get an astounding view of the Golden Temple. Sit back and take as much time as you need to capture every part of it. Then head over to the main temple and get into the queue.

Part 4

Golden temple queue

There will be a huge queue to enter the temple; there will always be a huge queue to enter the temple. So be patient and stand in the line. There won’t be any pushing or rushing in the queue; everyone will be at peace chanting their prayers.

Inside Golden Temple

You can pray or sit inside the golden temple for as long as you desire. There are three floors of the temple so make sure to visit all three of them.
